Boilers & Heating Systems

HEATING SYSTEMS

Prices can vary from all different types of existing systems, one common job we do a lot is taking the old style system where you have a hot water cylinder in the airing-cupboard and tanks in the loft out, then we convert the full system into a system that works with a more efficient combi boiler.
There’s a few things we would need to check before doing this as not all properties are suited, one of the things would be the cold water mains flow rate. There’s no point having a combi boiler if your mains pressure/ flow rate is low.

When it comes to heating systems we cover it all from single appliance repairs to full boiler installations, thermostatic valve replacement or a full new heating system, radiators and pipework we can do it all to the highest of standards.

That’s not to say you can’t have one but getting this upgraded can be costly and would involve your water supplier. A lot of the time we will need to also upgrade your gas pipework too as combi boilers especially the bigger kilowatt output ones require more gas than the older systems.

If your system is this old style and you’re thinking of upgrading it to a combi, the good news is we can come and take a look and assess your property for free and tell you the best options for your specific house, we would look at the most cost effective way of doing it, new boiler positioning and a lot more.

We can install all styles of radiators to your system if you’re wanting an upgrade, from the standard white wall hung to your floor standing cast iron period type. We have a range of recommendations and can show you previous work for inspiration too.

Sometimes the more modern styles give out slightly less heat so it’s important to work out what your room needs in terms of BTU ‘s, this is how heat output is calculated in radiator terms.
We can do this for you or if you scroll down you will find our own BTU calculator so you can have a look and work it out yourself.

Common faults in heating systems

I thought it would be handy to list a few common faults below to help you get up and running faster.

The most common faults we find is that the system pressure is low, your pressurised combi-boiler system should normally sit around 1 bar when cold, 2 bar is common when hot.
If you’re having issues the chances are the system will be cold so make sure your pressure gauge is reading 1 bar if not you will need to pressurise the system using the system filling loop, this may be obvious but also could be hidden you can search your boiler make and model on youtube to find tutorials on how to do this to save you some Penny’s.

If not feel free to call us in and we can make sure it’s all set up correctly for you and ensure it’s not going to reoccur.

If you’re having an issue with just one single radiator the chances are you’ve got a stuck down thermostatic valve and this can also be rectified pretty easy just by removing the head of the valve.
Again, if you’re struggling we can come and replace the valve for you without hassle.

Cold at the top or cold at the bottom?

If your radiator is cold at the top it means it needs the air bleeding out of the system, if it’s cold at the bottom it means your system is mucky and will need cleaning out.

Another common fault is with motorised valves, they can stop working or get stuck in the closed or hot water position. A lot of these valves have a manual override leaver so you can manually open the valve in order to get your heating system running again temporarily until you call in the professionals, in this case it’s common to just drain the system and replace the full valve which we would do for you.

If you’re not having any issues and want to keep it that way we recommend getting appliances serviced annually and your system check for efficiency, this could also include checking your heating system is clean, and making sure your system has enough inhibitor.

A lot of this can be check annually with a boiler service, if you’re a landlord and rent your property out you will already know that you need to get your property checked for gas safety so it might be a good idea to get the boiler serviced at the same time to avoid and breakdowns and to keep your tenants happy we offer a reminder service where we can remind you when your checks are next due so you never forget. We cover all of this for you and can keep on top of the maintenance too.
